New Jersey Insurance Regulations

In New Jersey, a lapsed policy may be reinstated:

Reinsurance is a contract between insurers that exists when one insurer (the reinsurer) agrees to accept a portion of a risk covered by another insurer (typically a smaller company). The ceding company is responsible for any coverage it has written, but will have a legitimate claim against the reinsurer for any portion of its loss that is reinsured.

The accumulation stage is the period when the owner is investing money into the contract. During the accumulation stage, the cash value in the annuity is invested in shares of open-end investment companies or UITs called accumulation units.

If a policy lapses, New Jersey insurance law allows the policy owner may apply to have the policy reinstated. The insured must provide evidence of insurability; and pay past-due premiums, any outstanding policy loans, and interest on the outstanding loan and past-due premiums. Reinstatement must be applied for within 3 years.
